Basses de Sant Pere
The jewel under the dust
Nestled between the Palau de la Música, the Ciutadella Park, the Church of Santa Maria del Mar and the Mercat del Born, the Ribera area was formerly the residence of merchants, sailors and artisans. Some of them showed off their power and wealth by building palaces, many of which still stand. The Ribera was also the refuge for several artists, such as Pablo Picasso.
After some years of deterioration, the neighbourhood is now the Montmartre of Barcelona. Designers, artists and gallery owners now vie for a shop in its narrow streets teeming with history.
The Basses de Sant Pere 9 building is located in the heart of the Ribera, a few steps from the Arc de Triomf.
Left abandoned for years, this labyrinth of tiny stairs and empty flats offers treasures. Amid centuries-old furniture, we discovered wooden beams, an entrance with stone stairs from a bygone era, a vaulted cellar like an old jail, and many other things.
We have been very excited to work for months to recover the former glory of this jewel, polishing every detail with a goldsmith’s love and care.
